Modern Abstract Art

Modern Abstract Art In The 20Th Century

Although modern abstract art first appeared in the 19th century, it became a major force in the art world in the 20th century.

Utilizing color, form, and lines, this style attempts to create a work that is completely devoid of realism.

This is directly antithetical to the long history of western art beginning in the Renaissance.

The modern artists attempted to find a way of expressing what was currently happening in the world, especially in the fields of science and technology.

The departure from reality of modern abstract art may be slight, total, or anywhere in between.

Geometric abstraction is generally a total form of abstract art, and cubism completely alters the objects or people it is depicting.

Early 20th century artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Georges Seurat, Paul Cézanne, and Paul Gauguin were considered post impressionists.

Their work led to the development of modern abstract art. Much of the creation of the form occurred in Paris, with artists such as Henri Matisse, André Derain, Georges Braque, and others.

The pre-cubists, as they were called, created works that were flamboyantly colored. Their paintings included both landscapes and portraits. This style became known as Fauvism, which is from the French, meaning the wild beast.

These paintings had visible brushstrokes, and de-emphasized realistic values.

Pablo Picasso is generally considered to be the first of the cubist painters. This form of modern abstract art reduces all of the elements of nature to the cube, along with the sphere and the cone.

Although it was Picasso who truly developed cubism, it was Paul Cezanne who originally theorized it. In 1907 Picasso painted Les Demoiselles d'Avignon.

This work is considered to be one of the major early works in the forms of cubism and modern art in general.

Dada had its greatest impact from 1916 to 1922. Directly coming from cubism this form of modern abstract art was political, making a statement against the First World War.

Having its birth in Zurich, Dada relished its anti-art status. Often using collage, important artists in this field included George Grosz, Hannah Höch, and Hans Richter.

Other forms of modern abstract art included Futurism, which influenced Art Deco. Futurism originated in Italy, and dealt with the glorification of modern technological devices such as cars and airplanes.

Orphism, used pure abstraction. Sonia Terk Delaunay and her husband Robert Delaunay pioneered this form in Paris.

As their works progressed, nothing in their paintings could be recognized. Bright and contrasting colors were the emphasis of their works.

Modern abstract art may not be for everyone.

However, it is an art form that has been with us for well over a century, and continues to influence the works of artists the world over.
